Tesla Shanghai to manufacture 300,000 cars from January to September despite chip shortage – sources

BEIJING, Sept.26 (Reuters) – The Tesla Inc plant (TSLA.O) in Shanghai is expected to produce 300,000 cars in the first nine months of the year, capped by a rush in deliveries at the end of the July quarter- September, despite a global semiconductor shortage crisis, according to two sources.

The plant manufactures Model 3 electric sedans and Model Y sport utility vehicles for domestic and international markets, including Germany and Japan.

About 240,000 vehicles were shipped from the plant in the first eight months, many for export, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association. Tesla has not announced details of the plant’s production.

The sources requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In August, an official in the region where the Tesla plant is located said it is expected to produce 450,000 vehicles this year, including 66,100 for export. Read more
