As the Model Y appears to be on track to become Tesla’s best-selling vehicle to date, the attention paid to the vehicle, apparently even by the company itself, has been fairly tempered at best. Its unveiling was subtle and not at all like the flashy, fiery, and dramatic debut of the cyberpunk-themed Cybertruck, and its first rollout went quietly, without much handing over like the Model S and Model 3.
Tesla’s manipulation of the Model Y ramp almost makes it seem like the vehicle was something that, while potentially disruptive in itself, simply complements the company’s initial lineup of EVs. Still, if the electric carmaker’s recent strategies are any indication, it looks like Tesla is setting the stage for what could very well be nothing less than a Model Y invasion of China next year.
Just recently, for example, reports emerged indicating that Tesla was investing 42 million RMB (approximately $ 6.4 million) in a new facility that will be responsible for the production of Superchargers, the company’s fast charging system. . The factory would be located near Gigafactory Shanghai, and it will be completed next year. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce around 10,000 superchargers per year, according to documents submitted to the site.
That’s an impressive number of superchargers, and many of them would likely be built specifically for the Chinese auto market. With a robust supercharging network in China, the stigma of electric vehicles with limited range is fading, and the all-electric crossover may actually become the first choice of car buyers who enjoy long road trips. China, after all, is rolling out a program that strongly encourages new energy vehicles, and there is no better way to promote such an initiative than by supporting long-range electric vehicles like the Model Y.
Tesla’s Gigafactory site in Shanghai is ready for the Model Y ramp made in China. The second phase of the plant, where the all-electric crossover would be built, was completed earlier this year, and expectations are high that mass production of the Model Y can begin early next year. Backed by a rapidly growing supercharger network, the Model Y could become one of China’s perfect family vehicles. And given that Giga Shanghai’s Phase 2 plant is expected to produce 250,000 Model Yers next year, 2021 could very well become Tesla’s year in China.
Tesla’s Supercharger ramp in China is quite notable, especially as the company currently lists just over 20,000 Superchargers globally today, despite building its Superchargers network since the model debut days.
