Texas State Representative Senfronia Thompson – one of the Democratic lawmakers who fled Austin for Washington to deprive the state legislature of a quorum to vote on election integrity legislation – delivered a fiery speech in which she appeared to compare Texas officials threatening her arrest with the act of a slave escaping from the plantation.

Speaking in Alexandria, Va. On Friday, Thompson, D-Harris said his caucus “refused[s] be a hostage. “

“I know there are search warrants for us and I am ready to be arrested,” she said. “What do you do to a slave if you don’t do anything other than stop him when he runs away. We’ve fled Texas and if they want to stop me, go ahead. I’m ready to be? stopped.”

Thompson and his fellow Democrats are staying in Washington this week to attend a plethora of voting rights-related events featuring guest speakers.
