Texas reports 6,041 new coronavirus cases, 48 ​​more deaths

El Paso, Texas – Texas health officials reported on Sunday 6,041 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 48 other illness-related deaths caused by the novel coronavirus.

The pandemic continued to put pressure on the state’s medical infrastructure with more than 8,600 Texans hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sunday, according to Texas State Department Health Services.

In hard-hit El Paso, Mayor Dee Margo said there were signs the week-to-week virus outbreak could level off. Hospitals in the area have a 79% capacity, with open beds “that we haven’t had in a while,” the Republican mayor told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

The El Paso and San Antonio areas are subject to partial curfews until Monday morning, as local leaders try to limit the spread of the virus.

Texas health officials have recorded more than one million cases of COVID-19 and 21,357 deaths. It is believed that the actual number of cases is much higher because many people have not been tested and some people with the disease do not have symptoms.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that go away within a few weeks. But for others, especially the elderly and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal. The vast majority of people recover.
