The Senate Finance Committee of Texas on Monday unanimously approved a bill to endow every state teacher with an increase of $ 5,000 starting next year. , according to The Dallas Morning News.
Senate Bill 3, sponsored by Senator Jane Nelson (R), would require Texas school districts to grant full-time teachers an increase of $ 5,000, regardless of their previous salary.
The bill would benefit approximately 350,000 teachers across the state.
The Dallas Morning News noted that the bill faced many steps to become law. The bill must be adopted by the entire Senate before going to the House for debate in committee.
The bill, which is supported by 23 of the 31 senators, should be passed in the Senate.
"The goal of Senate Bill 3 is to provide a $ 5,000, permanent and widespread salary increase for every teacher in Texas," Nelson told the newspaper. "I can not promise for every future legislature, but I will say it, they will have to cancel it.
The bill was passed Monday after being amended to include charter school teachers and to cover the pension costs that would be associated with the salary increase.
Some teachers said Monday that the bill should also apply to librarians and other specialists.
Nelson told the Morning News that she was open to this idea but that she was skeptical about adequate funding for the state.
"What we wanted above all was for our teachers to receive this increase," Nelson said. "That does not mean that others are not important, we do not have press to print, we only have a certain amount of money."
The debate around Senate Bill 3 comes as teachers across the country are protesting for better wages. For example, about 3,000 members of the Oakland Education Association (OAS) started protesting last week to get a better salary.
