Texas teacher cuts her own hair to show support for girl being teased

When Shannon Grimm noticed that a 5-year-old girl from her kindergarten class was "really sad and depressed at school because her friends think she's got it." as a boy, "she wanted to encourage the student by showing solidarity.

"I would cry because I would think that school is not fun," said the girl at the branch.

Then Grimm cut his brown hair up to the waist in a goblin cut, like that of Prisilla.

"What better way to show them that you can look in every way while staying true to yourself and that you can be whoever you want, no matter how you look, than cutting my hair?" the teacher said in a live Facebook feed on the episode.
Prisilla kissed her teacher gratefully.
Grimm even bought matching bows for her and Prisilla, said the Willis Independent School District, north of Houston, where he works.

At a school council meeting last week, the girl gave Grimm a medal for being her hero during a difficult time. Grimm had also named Prisilla for the district's student award of the month for his courage.

Although Grimm says she misses her long hair, she says that the experience has allowed her to better understand Prisilla's feelings.

"Sometimes you just have to experience, you have to teach them and show them that you are there for them."

When Grimm started her haircut, her son told her that she looked like a boy. Entering a grocery store or other public places with her new agency made her aware of herself, she said.

However, the teacher stated that the temporary discomfort was worth it as she was able to help Prisilla feel better with her appearance.

"I do not want my students to feel that their self-confidence is low, that they do not want to go to school because of the way people see them and tell them things" said Grimm. "I want them to come to school and enjoy being in school."

Her hair will grow back, but Grimm said she hoped to instill in her students and two children a more lasting lesson.

"It does not matter what your haircut is," she says. "You are beautiful whatever happens."
