Texas Woman’s Hires Most Diverse Student Body of All Time – News & Events

September 10, 2021 – DENTON – Texas Woman’s University listed its most diverse student body of all time this fall and saw significant gains among first-time college students and graduate students, according to a preliminary census.

Overall, Texas Woman’s registrations fell from 16,440 in fall 2020 to 16,326 in fall 2021, a decrease of 0.7%. The latest census count ranks second in university history.

“There is tremendous interest in a TWU education from potential students and their families, and the increase in freshman enrollment is a testament to the quality of education offered by Texas Woman,” said Vice President of Student Life Monica Mendez-Grant, Ed .D., who oversees the management of university enrollment.

Incoming students attending university for the first time have jumped 14.5% from a year ago. Growth was driven primarily by Hispanics, whose numbers increased 13.6% from the previous year. Overall, Hispanics made up 40% of the first-time college cohort; African Americans made up 21.4% of the entry class; and Asians accounted for 10.4%.

Minorities now make up 57.9% of the entire student body, a slight increase from the 57.3% reported a year earlier, making Texas Woman’s overall student body the most diverse on record.

Texas Woman’s is a federally designated institution serving Hispanics, and the university has consistently been recognized as one of the nation’s most diverse institutions. Last year, US News & World Report ranked the university as the most diverse in Texas and the fifth most diverse institution in the country.

In addition to the growth in diversity, graduate enrollment increased 4.6% from fall 2020, thanks to a 9.1% increase in the number of continuing graduate students. Overall, graduate students make up 37% of the entire student body this fall, up from 35.2% in 2020.

The preliminary number of registrations has been counted on the 12th day of class and must be certified by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
