More than 600 medical workers in Thailand who received two doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine have been infected with COVID-19, health officials said on Sunday.

The Department of Public Health said that 618 of the 77,348 medical workers vaccinated with Sinovac contracted the virus between April and July.

A nurse has died from the so-called breakthrough infection and another medical worker is in critical condition, health officials said.

Senior health official Sopon Iamsirithawon said on Sunday that a panel of experts had recommended that at-risk medical workers receive the third dose.

“It will be a different vaccine, either the AstraZeneca viral vector or an mRNA vaccine, which Thailand will receive in the short term,” he said, adding that the recommendation would be considered on Monday.

Thailand recorded a record 9,418 community infections on Sunday.

The Southeast Asian County has reported a total of 336,371 cases and 2,711 deaths since the pandemic began last year.
