The AARP Foundation is looking for volunteers in Gainesville to help local taxpayers

The AARP Gainesville Foundation recruits volunteers for its Tax-Aide program, the largest volunteer-based tax preparation service in the country.

The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation has grown since its inaugural team of just four volunteers in 1968 and has served more than 68 million taxpayers since its inception. The program has volunteers in each state who are typically over 30,000. Volunteers can take on a variety of roles to help taxpayers while working in person or virtually. The Tax-Aide program is currently looking for volunteers to work as tax preparers – to be trained – as well as interpreters, program managers and communication or technical assistants.

“Volunteers come from a variety of industries and range from retirees to university students. All levels and types of experience are welcome, ”said Carol Sarisky, AARP District Tax Assistance Coordinator for Alachua County.

The Tax-Aide program provides free in-person and online tax preparation and assistance nationwide to low- to moderate-income taxpayers.

“Due to the complexity of the US tax code, many taxpayers overpay taxes or turn to paid tax services that they cannot afford,” Sarisky said. “Some may forgo filing taxes and miss out on the credits and deductions they’ve earned because they’re not able to pay for the aid.”

The program helped file more than 800 tax returns in Alachua County last year, a number that has risen from around 1,200 to 1,500 due to the pandemic.
