Age is nothing but an extremely variable number, says science.
A gap of 30 years separates countries in terms of the degree of aging of people, to such an extent that they feel "to be 65 years old," reveals a new international study published in the journal The Lancet Public Health.
The researchers found that people aged 76 in Japan and 46 in Papua New Guinea suffer from the same level of age-related health problems as the "average" 65-year-old.
"These disparate findings show that an increase in life expectancy at a later age may constitute an opportunity or threat to the general well-being of populations, depending on the health problems associated with aging that the population feels regardless of chronological age, "says lead author Dr. Angela. Y. Chang, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Center for Health Trends and Forecasting at the University of Washington.
While traditional aging indicators explore increased longevity, this study – the first of its kind, says Chang – explores both the chronological age and the rate at which aging affects the deterioration of health.
"Age-related health problems can lead to early retirement, reduced manpower and higher health costs. Heads of government and other stakeholders influencing health systems need to take into account the negative consequences of aging for people, "Chang said.
With the help of estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) and the reference group recruitment "of the world average," the Chang team measured "the burden age-related diseases "by following the" disability-adjusted life years "or DALY, a measure of healthy life loss, related to 92 diseases.
The results cover the years 1990 to 2017 in 195 countries and territories.
How American rates: The Americans had 161.5 DALY per 1,000 (that is, they feel "65 to 68.5 years old), which places it in 53rd place – just behind the Iran at 54th with 164.8 DALY per 1,000 (69 years).
