The bat found in Hayward Mall has a positive test for rabies

HAYWARD – Health officials said a bat found at a Hayward mall Tuesday was tested positive for rabies.

The bat was discovered at the entrance 8 of the Southland Mall and submitted to the Alameda County Public Health Laboratory for testing.

The circumstances concerning the bat are still under investigation, according to the Department of Health.

This is the first rabid bat in Alameda County in 2019. Last year, rabies was detected in two bats.
