My name is Sarah Purvis (@sarah__purvis) and I am 34 years old. I live in Pasco, Washington, and I work for the Department of Health and Human Services. After gaining weight from treatment for a thyroid disorder and postpartum depression, I turned to workouts and Beachbody’s 21 Day Fix Meal Plan to lose 100 pounds.
I have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember, and have tried every diet in the book. I had a very unhealthy relationship with food from a young age, often using food as a coping mechanism for emotional distress.
In 2011, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease, an immune system disorder that results in overproduction of thyroid hormones. I received radioiodine therapy a few years later to treat my Graves disease, and although it eventually alleviated many of the uncomfortable symptoms of the thyroid disorder, I gained a lot of weight the first year after. the treatment. (This is a fairly common side effect of hyperthyroidism treatment.) My weight climbed to 264 pounds, which was by far the heaviest I have ever been.
I started on a low carb Atkins diet and cardio classes at the gym a few days a week to lose weight. It took about a year of following the diet very closely to bring my weight down to 185 pounds. Although I was grateful to see the weight drop, I knew I would have a hard time maintaining this way of eating long term.
Another turning point for me was when I got pregnant with my daughter in 2016. My mother passed away just before my second trimester, and I was in so much emotion and I was struggling to cry. I gained 70 pounds during my pregnancy, I don’t exercise, and I eat junk food, which made my weight go up.
After my daughter was born, I was diagnosed with postpartum depression and I was in desperate need to feel better physically and mentally.
So I started my weight loss journey on March 6, 2017. I wanted to feel like myself again. At six weeks after giving birth, I decided to start working out at home with a Beachbody program called 21 Day Fix. I had started following a girl on social media who was using Beachbody’s programs in her own weight loss journey after the birth of her second son. I loved the convenience of working outside the home, especially now that I was a mom of a newborn and working full time. I would wake up early or work out after my daughter fell asleep at night.

I also followed the 21 Day Portion Fix Meal Plan that came with it and joined an online accountability group for additional support. The Portion Fix meal plan (which I still follow today) uses color-coded containers to teach you how to control portions. You eat from an approved list of foods that are healthy, clean, and nourish your body. I love the food I eat and I don’t feel deprived. I don’t need to eliminate food groups, or count calories or carbohydrates. The meal plan is super simple and I’ve been able to maintain it for over three years now.

This is what I eat in a day.
- Breakfast: Shakeology with almond milk, half a banana and spinach and a slice of Dave’s Killer Bread toasted with coconut oil.
- Lunch: Salad with lots of veggies, healthy fat (like feta cheese or avocado), chicken, healthier dressing (store bought or homemade) and a sweet potato on the side.

I continued to do program after program in the Beachbody Online Library while following the meal plan, and lost 100 pounds in one year.
I was in the best shape of my life! I had never done weight training in all my years at the gym, but found a love for it through the home fitness programs I followed. My favorite program so far is 80 Day Obsession, which combines weight lifting, cardio, and core work, along with the Portion Fix meal plan. I have completed it five times now and plan to do it again this winter.

I wake up at 5:30 am to train before work. Most of the programs that I follow involve working six days a week, with one day off. Workouts typically last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the program. I love programs that combine strength training and cardio. I love the convenience of working from home and the variety of programs offered.

These three small changes had a huge impact on my overall weight loss.
- I focused on mental health changes. Working on your mental health is just as important as working on your physical health. I read or listen to personal development books and podcasts every day, I go out for a walk every day to clear my head, my journal and attend counseling. I also have a supportive community. I think all of these have helped me have a better attitude towards health and fitness and helped me live a more fulfilling life.

- I focused on consistency. No matter what meal plan you follow or what workouts you do, if you keep stopping and starting over or quitting completely, you won’t get the results you want. I remembered that I couldn’t be mad at the results I didn’t get from the work I didn’t! Be patient, trust the process, keep a journal or follow up for accountability, and do the trick.

- I celebrated my successes and stopped comparing my journey to that of someone else. I was to find joy in the journey and celebrate my successes along the way, no matter how small. I took pictures and measurements, instead of relying on the scale! I was my biggest cheerleader and I remembered the only person I was competing against was myself.

My life has changed completely in recent years.
Overall, I lost 100 pounds. What started out as a desperate attempt to lose weight and recover from my grief and postpartum depression has turned into a new healthy lifestyle that I love. I have found the most amazing friendships within my online community and have learned that when you love yourself you open yourself up to many more opportunities for connection and growth. Community and responsibility are so important to me.
I now * want * my routine. I love working out every day, eating my favorite healthy foods, and taking the time to take care of my mental health. This lifestyle makes me feel strong and energized, and keeps me sane through the ups and downs of life.
