The importance of wearing sunscreen to prevent burns, the visible signs of aging and skin cancer is a no-brainer. These are the ingredients of the SPF products you use every day that make this category of care particularly controversial.
There is a lot to consider when choosing a sunscreen, the biggest debate being whether you should choose a chemical or physical SPF. Traditionally, chemical sunscreens are composed of chemicals that penetrate the skin to absorb sunlight so as not to burn. Physical sunscreens use minerals like zinc and titanium dioxide, which act as a mirror to reflect the rays of your skin.
Many chemical sunscreens contain ingredients such as oxybenzone, now considered an environmental hazard for coral reefs. This same ingredient has also been controversial as it is advanced as a potential hormone disruptor. So, if you're looking for an effective, reef-friendly, nontoxic SPF in 2019, mineral sunscreen may be your best choice.
As for what level of SPF should you go with? Think 30 or more. "In general, an SPF of 30 or higher will block 97% of UVB rays," says Dr. Susan Chon, a dermatologist in Houston, Texas. "However, to have full spectrum coverage without chemical sunscreen, the product must also contain zinc oxide."
There are dozens of mineral sunscreens offering this level of protection, but there is only one problem: zinc is known to leave a white, greasy skin. Fortunately, physical sun protection formulas have come a long way, and there are now options that remain without a trace, too.
Here are the eight best mineral sunscreens with clean, non-toxic, non-greasy formulas to wear this summer.
