The large red patch of Jupiter, a vast storm system visible on the gas giant since at least the 1830s and perhaps the 1660s, would be "collapsing".
"I had never seen it before for 17 years to image Jupiter," reports veteran observer Anthony Wesley, of Australia, who photographed a gas streamer standing out from the GRS on May 19: the gas plume is huge, extending over 10,000 km from the central storm to a nearby jet stream that seems to prevail. Wesley says that such a banner comes off every week or so.
