The biggest games of 2021: all the release dates you need to know

[ad_1]

The past year has been an important one for the games. Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched after 15 years of hype, followed by The Last of Us 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 blockbusters. Animal Crossing fell while we were sequestered in our homes, becoming an unexpected success. And Sony and Xbox both launched their next-gen platforms in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S, respectively.

So what will happen in 2021? A lot. Unfortunately, most of the big titles planned for this year don’t have a release date yet. Here are five promising ones, followed by a list of titles that don’t.

IO Interactive

IO Interactive rebooted Hitman, the classic stealth franchise in which you play the adapted Mercinary Agent 47, in 2016. After a solid sequel (2018’s Hitman 2), the series is expected to reach its climax with the third installment on January 20. “You get to travel the world and kill interesting people,” a recent trailer teases. I can’t say no to that.

Hitman 3 launches on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Switch, Stadia and PC.

Nintendo

Super Mario 3D World is the latest WiiU game to be ported to Switch. That’s not a bad thing, as the WiiU was home to several great games that didn’t spend their time in the sun. This includes Mario Kart 8, the best-selling Switch game to date.

Super Mario 3D World was praised by all when it was originally released, so it’s worth playing if you’ve missed it before.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake

Release Date: March 18

Ubisoft

Remasters are cool, but remakes can be really magical. After Shadow of the Colossus, Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, three fantastic remakes, 2021 brings Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Originally released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, Ubisoft is giving the platform game a complete 2021 overhaul.

Price of Persia: The Sands of Time is set to launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.

Capcom

Following the hugely popular Monster Hunter World, which launched on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018, and the port of the 3DS Monster Hunter Generations game to Switch, the Nintendo console is finally getting its own brand new Monster Hunter game. Like the other games in the franchise, it promises a giant world and hundreds of hours of beast slaughter.

Bethesda

After years mainly focusing on Dishonored, developers Arkane Studios are switching to a new IP in Deathloop. And it looks sick.

Here’s the idea: you’re an assassin trapped in a time loop that resets after each day. To get out, you must kill eight “visionaries” who are scattered around an island. The caveat is that you will have to do this in a time loop. The second caveat is that as you search for the Eight Visionaries, a rival assassin keeps busy with hunt you.

Deathloop will be released for PlayStation 5 and PC on May 21, with an Xbox version coming likely next year (it has timed console exclusivity for a year).

Upcoming Games ‘TBA’ 2021

The following titles are expected to be released this year. We will update this page as the games have an official release date.

Warner Bros.

Lego Star Wars is back after five years. The last time we saw the franchise was with The Force Awakens in 2016. This game looks a lot more ambitious: The Skywalker Saga Lego-izes the nine Star Wars movies.

The Skywalker Saga does not yet have a final release date, but it is expected in the first or second quarter. When it comes out it will hit PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, Switch and PC.

Far Cry 6

Release date: 2021

Ubisoft

Originally slated for February, Far Cry 6 has been delayed until an unknown date in 2021. But it’s set to be the largest and most complete Far Cry yet and is set in the tropical region of Yara – loosely based on Cuba.

Not only will the game launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X | S, PC, and Google Stadia, but it will also be coming to Amazon’s Luna platform.

The headlining trailer for last year’s Game Awards was a new Mass Effect. It’s probably still a long way off. The advantage? More time for the remastered benefits of Mass Effect. Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes updated (but not revamped) versions of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 and will launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Gran Turismo 7

Release date: 2021

Sony Interactive

Gran Turismo has been a staple of PlayStation consoles since the original GT launched on the original PS in 1997. Gran Turismo 7 was announced for the PlayStation 5 last June, and we know little about it other than that it is set for a 2021 version.

Microsoft

Halo Infinite Was Supposed To Be The Big Thing That Launched Alongside The Xbox Series X S but, after a poor response from fans to a preview last year, it was delayed until fall 2021. The name Halo alone makes it a must-have game for most Xbox owners and developers 343 Industries are trying something new by making multiplayer free.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Release date: 2021

After both Middle-Earth games showed that the Lord of the Rings games can still rock out, 2021 will bring another serving in the form of Lord of the Rings: Gollum. It won’t be the action RPG that the Middle-earth games were, instead focusing on Gollum’s stealth and cunning, but it does sound intriguing.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will come to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X | S, Switch and PC.

Western forbidden horizon

Release date: 2021

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the best games on PlayStation 4, and its sequel arrives in 2021. Horizon Forbidden West follows Aloy’s 30th-century journey through Utah, Nevada, and California as she tracks origins of a killer virus. Really, a game for our time.

Horizon Forbidden West will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 this year.

God of War: Ragnarok

Release date: 2021

Sony Interactive

Speaking of outstanding PS4 games and their sequels, God of War: Ragnarok is also coming to PlayStation 4 and 5 this year.

That’s actually all we know about the game so far, as the game’s teaser only featured a half-logo and the 2021 release window.

Hogwarts Legacy

Release date: 2021

Warner Bros.

The giant and legendary history of Hogwarts witchcraft and magic is a perfect opportunity for a top game. Later this year, we’ll see if developers Avalanche Software can pull the trick with Hogwarts Legacy. The game is set in the 1800s, pre-Harry Potter era, and will blend role-playing elements with Potter lore.

Hogwarts Legacy will launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X | S and PC.

Resident Evil Village

Release date: 2021.

Capcom

Don’t be fooled by the name: Resident Evil Village is really Resident Evil 8. It’s a direct sequel to the story of Resident Evil 7, but the developers called it “Village” to indicate how the village unfolding the game is a key element. Not so subtle – but definitely scary.

We don’t know when Resident Evil Village will launch, other than the ‘2021’ window, but when it does it will be on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X | S and PC.
