The biggest supermoon of 2019 illuminates the sky tonight and tomorrow

CNN – The full moon of February will illuminate the sky as the largest super-moon of the year.

The supermoon occurs during this full moon as it will be closer to Earth in its orbit. Technically, the supermoon will reach its peak Tuesday morning at 10:54 ET, but it will not be visible at that time. Watch for Monday and Tuesday nights instead.

The moonrise will be the best time for those wishing to capture great supermoon pictures, as the moon will be closest to the horizon. Check your local time for the moonrise here.

The full moon of February is also known as the snow moon. Each month, the full moon has a different name indicating what is most associated with that time. Indeed, centuries ago, the lunar months were associated with the seasons rather than the solar year.

Native Americans and Europeans gave February the title of "snow moon" because it was the month associated with heavy snowfall, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

The February moon has also been called the moon of bones or hunger because of the lack of food available in winter.

The supermoon marks a big difference from 2018, when there was no full moon in February – called Black Moon. This happens every 19 years. This is because January and March have two full moons.

In January, we were treated to the super Wolf Wolf Wolf, and while it's not as exciting, the super-moon should be a magnificent sight. And if you miss this one, there will be another supermoon in March.
