The Blue Jays and Twins hit a deal sending a right-hander Jose berrios in Toronto, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). Jon Morosi from MLB.com reports that superior pitch prospect Simeon Woods-Richardson is part of the return. infielder Austin martin, the No.5 pick in last summer’s draft, will also travel to Minnesota, reports Athletic’s Dan Hayes.

Berrios, 27, gives the Blue Jays perhaps the second best pitcher in the trade this summer, behind only Max Scherzer, who is expected to join the Dodgers later today. Unlike Scherzer, he’s controllable beyond the 2021 season, as he’s only in his second officiating season. Berrios earns $ 6.1 million in 2021 and will need yet another arbitrage raise this winter before reaching free agency at the end of the 2022 campaign.

Berrios will join Hyun Jin Ryu and reborn Robbie Ray atop the Toronto rotation, comprising what now appear to be a formidable trio. He’s in the middle of one of his best seasons, with a 3.48 ERA with a 25.7% strikeout rate, an excellent 6.5% walk rate and a ground ball rate. 43.6%, a career high. He posted those numbers over 20 starts and a total of 121 1/3 frames, standing out as one of the declining pitching numbers in today’s game which averages over six frames per outing.

Of course, Berrios isn’t just sustainable by play. He’s been one of the game’s most enduring starting pitchers overall, throughout his career. He has never been on the Major League’s injured list and is currently on track for what would be his fourth consecutive season on a full start list. He made 26 appearances in 2017 – the last season he was picked for minors – and has since made 32 starts, 32 starts, 12 starts (a full workload in last year’s 60-game season). ) and 20 departures so far in 2020.

During that time, he never posted an ERA higher than 4.00 and reached an overall rating of 3.76 with a strikeout rate of 24.2% and a walk rate of 7.2%. Berrios might not be quite a high caliber Cy Young ace, but he’s as consistent and enduring as a second / third starter.

More soon.
