After 24 long days and a massive search effort, a body was found on a ridge in Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park.
The deceased is believed to be Philip Kreycik, the 37-year-old runner who went missing on July 10, police said.
“Everything leads us to believe that we found Philip up there on the ridge,” said Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office at a Tuesday night press conference. “Our mood is very dark. We wanted to get him home alive and safe.”
“I know there will be a lot of questions… why haven’t we found it sooner?” Kelly added. “There are a lot of factors involved, and nothing is perfect. But a lot of energy has been put into it. We will handle this matter with the utmost investigative integrity… to make sure nothing is missed, because at the end of the day, her family want answers on how and why. And they deserve those answers. “
Captain Lance Brede of the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department told media the body was found far from any trail and the area where the body was found was not easily visible from the trail on which he was running. “We believe Philip was located in a very remote area of the park,” Brede said. “This is not a designated trail. It was located 250 yards from the trail, near a tree.”
This weekend alone, police said they searched “100%” of places where Kreycik may be.
Kelly said there are currently no signs of foul play and that a coroner will soon be identifying the remains.
“We are heartbroken today. We send all our love and support to the Kreycik family. Philip touched us all who worked on the search team,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in a tweet. “We are grateful to our community volunteers and the people of Pleasanton who have never wavered in their commitment. Philip will always be remembered.”
Kreycik, a resident of Berkeley, went missing during a run at Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park on July 10. The PG&E analyst and avid runner parked his car near the Moller Ranch staging area around 11 a.m., after telling his wife he was leaving for an hour-long run. When he did not return home as scheduled that afternoon, his wife reported him missing. Kreycik’s car was found intact, with his wallet and cell phone in it, police said.
Today’s news ends an unprecedented research effort that involved multiple agencies, drones, cadaver dogs, planes equipped with thermal imaging technology, and more than a thousand volunteers.
“Obviously her family is at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers right now… we are heartbroken about it,” Kelly said.
