by marvel what if series on Disney + is about to dig into the countless stories unfold throughout the freshly created multiverse of the MCU, many of which bear striking similarities to pieces of the cinematic canon established in previous films. But some of the series’ specific universes will delve into realities that would be nearly impossible to manifest outside of animation.
As Marvel Studio’s first animation project firmly anchored in the MCU – and one about exploring a multiverse of distant possibilities –what if is in the unique position of being able to get rather wild in terms of drawing the entire catalog of Marvel’s famous stories. When io9 recently spoke with what ifBrad Winderbaum executive producer, AC Bradley chief writer and director Bryan Andrews, they all pointed out how the animated series creatively freed them to go further than they could have otherwise. “If it hadn’t been animated, we wouldn’t have been able to truly probe the depths of the MCU like we did, ”Winderbaum said. “It’s almost endless what you are able to do in busy space, so if you could dream it, you can do it. While a lot of what ifAs the episodes rework familiar MCU rhythms, the series will also draw inspiration from Marvel comics. In any other circumstance, incorporating the outbreak of a zombifying pathogen into the MCU would derail the whole project somewhat. But Bradley explained how the idea of throwing zombies into the blender came to him very soon after Marvel director Kevin Feige asked for locations for the show’s first season. “I think I may have mentioned it early on as some kind of ‘what if we were to do that’ pie, not thinking at first that there was the very famous race,” Bradley remembers. “Brad was excited, then Kevin [Feige] sort of surprised us by saying, ‘Yeah, no. You are Do Marvel Zombies. ” ”
Bradley pointed out that more than any other what ifthe other independent entrances of, the Marvel zombies The episode is one that people might want to brush up on with the comics – written by Robert Kirkman, art by Sean Phillips, and covers by Arthur Suydam – in the works. “The fun part of Marvel zombies, at least for me, was to dive into that first run, ”Bradley said. “Probably more than any other episode. We took inspiration directly from the comics for inspiration and for specific actual scenes, because it’s so good and less taken from the movies.

One of the interesting and potentially trickiest aspects of adaptation Marvel zombies because the MCU comes down to who it’s all going to present itself. In all the Ultimate Fantastic Four Zombie plots written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Greg Land, the Fantastic Four feature quite widely in the discovery of the zombified universe. Likewise, X-Men characters like Magneto and Wolverine play an important role in Kirkman’s story. Considering what is planned for years to come on the big screen, it’s unlikely that any of the pieces of IP technically from Marvel but not yet in the MCU will appear in what if.
As much flexibility as the animated series gave the team, Andrews said there were limits to what they were able to do due to time and budget constraints, but in the end they paid the essential of their ideas fleshed out in the show. “We were always able to say it the way we wanted and show the things we wanted to show,” Andrews said. “I think animation gives us the freedom to do it. So we could be big and bold and crazy and grow, which is great, and I think that’s what the multiverse should do, and what the story is that these stories are going to do.
