MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It’s not something you see every day: a car lying upside down on three other vehicles in southern Minneapolis. Yet this is the scene that Tom Taggatz came home on Monday morning.
Overnight, a red two-door Nissan lost control and crashed into three of its vehicles on the 4200 block of Oakland Avenue South. The driver fled on foot and was not found.
“You didn’t expect to live in the middle of the block for something like this to happen,” Taggatz said.
While enjoying a quiet weekend of ice fishing in the north, Taggatz was unaware of the hustle and bustle at home.
“It was not a good feeling to know that the photos that were sent to me by my neighbor in this house tell me, ‘This is your house,’” Taggatz said.
His house is fine, but three of his vehicles are not. They are totaled, as well as the red Nissan that hit them. Parts of that car are still strewn across his lawn, and even on top of his garage.
The car is believed to be traveling so fast that it struck a hill and took off before crashing into vehicles in the driveway at Taggatz.

“If the vehicles hadn’t been there, my house is right here, the front living room is right there, I could easily have been, you know, injured there,” he says.
The accident happened at around 2:30 am The driver fled the scene, but neighbors did not call 911 because they did not see the accident. Eydie Campbell, who lives two doors away, said she heard an explosion and thought it was construction work a few blocks away.
“The house shook. It rocked the whole house, ”Campbell said. “Sensational. I mean, if anyone walked away, they were lucky.
Taggatz feels like a victim. He was about to sell one of the cars after spending time and money fixing it. The other belonged to his late aunt.
“Making something like this happen now is just devastating because I just don’t get it,” Taggatz said. “I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just too bad that things are going on here and there is no accountability. It’s like it’s okay and it’s not.
Minneapolis Police said the vehicle was not reported stolen and was registered with a man and his son in Blaine. Taggatz is not yet sure if the insurance will help him cope with his losses.
