An American jailed for murder after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville pleaded guilty to hate crimes at the hearing.

James Alex Fields, a 25-year-old professed neo-Nazi, was convicted of 29 of 30 counts in an agreement to avoid the death penalty.

Last December, Fields was sentenced to life in prison for driving his car into counter protesters in 2017, killing one person and injuring dozens of others.

He had previously claimed to have acted out of fear for his safety.

Fields traveled about 804 km from his home in Ohio to attend the rally in Virginia.

The "Unite the Right" march was held to protest the plans to dismantle a statue of General Robert E. Lee, who fought for the pro-slavery confederation during the American Civil War.

The counter-demonstrators opposed the rally and dozens of people were injured in the violence that broke out.

One, Heather Heyer, aged 32, was killed when Fields led to the crowd.
