(July 21, 2021City officials on Wednesday advised all residents and visitors to wear masks again indoors and in public places due to the increased virulence of the Delta variant.

According to a statement released late this afternoon, “due to the increase in cases in Cape Town and the Islands, the City of Nantucket Department of Health and Human Services is advising all residents and visitors, regardless or their vaccination status, to use masks indoors and in public places when physical distance is not possible.

The increased virulence of the Delta variant, and its great ability to infect even vaccinated people in some cases, mean that masking and distancing are highly recommended at this time. Prolonged exposure, indoors and at high concentrations, is probably the cause of infection of vaccinees. The Delta variant has also shown a revolutionary ability against natural immunity and can re-infect those who have previously had COVID. Please keep your safety and the safety of those around you in mind. “

The incidence of the coronavirus in Nantucket remains low, however, although five cases were confirmed between Friday and Tuesday. All cases have been attributed to travel and there have been no hospitalizations.

The city has two permanent COVID-19 vaccination clinics, both of which are held on the property of the First Way Education Authority. They are open from 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on Thursday and from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
