The city of Leeds, England, has made impressive progress in the fight against obesity in young children.

By the time children leave primary school in England, one-third will be overweight or obese.

According to the BBC, one of the most difficult groups to help is the poorest.

Figures published by the European Congress on Obesity, however, showed the opposite in the city of Leeds.

It was found that over a five-year period, the number of obese children aged four and five decreased by 6.4% and the number of obese children from disadvantaged backgrounds further decreased, on average 8.7%.

The city of Leeds has focused its efforts on the fight against obesity, especially among young children and those from disadvantaged areas.

The council has developed an infant obesity strategy targeting preschool children. Through programs and strategies, the reduction of childhood obesity has declined dramatically.

A handful of other regions in England have also seen a reduction in childhood obesity and it is hoped that the trend will begin to reverse.

But for older children, weight issues remain a huge challenge.
