Search for survivors after Dorian

Searching for victims of a deadly fire on a commercial dive ship near the southern coast of California was suspended Tuesday by the US Coast Guard. The fire that devastated the Conception killed 33 passengers and a crew member lying under the bridge, according to Sheriff Bill Brown of Santa Barbara County. Investigators have not yet determined how the fire broke out.

The rescuers found 20 corps while the crews worked to find 14 others, declared the sheriff. Eleven remains of women and nine men have been found so far. Investigators received more than 100 calls from family members and friends who believed that their loved ones were aboard the ship.

Divers saw between four and six other people in the submerged wreck, said the sheriff. The authorities are trying to stabilize the boat that sank in a water of about 60 feet so that the divers can recover these remains.

The Design, of a length of 75 feet, was a three day excursion into the chain of rugged and windswept islands that form the Channel Islands National Park in the Pacific Ocean. The fire was declared around 3 am in the port of Platt, off the island of Santa Cruz. The flames blocked an escape hatch and a stairwell leading to the sleeping area, cluttered with recreational diving passengers.

Five of the six crew members aboard the Conception escaped when the fire was unleashed by jumping into an inflatable boat that they drove to a nearby boat. The escaped crew members took refuge on a boat called The Grape Escape, anchored nearby. Two suffered minor injuries.

"It is upside down in relatively shallow waters with receding tides moving it," said Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown.
