The Indianapolis Colts clinched their first free agent of the offseason, agreeing to meet with Devin Funchess, former 24-year-old receiver, formerly of the Carolina Panthers. Tom Pelissero of the NFL network was the first to report:

The one-year deal, estimated at $ 13 million, is likely to meet Indianapolis' greatest need as the season approaches.

Last season, Funchess caught 44 balloons for an average of 12.5 receiving yards, amassing 549 yards and four touchdowns. His best season is in 2017, when he captured 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 starts. He averaged 13.9 yards per reception over the course of his career, with 21 touchdowns in total.

The Michigan product was a second-round pick for the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFL draft, and ended his rookie contract there. With the Colts, Funchess is likely to stand at No. 2 catcher position behind TY Hilton and ahead of Deon Cain, who missed his rookie season with a knee injury. Funchess will enter the Colts' locker room as the prime target for Andrew Luck as the highest receiver on the team. He is also the same height as Eric Ebron and Ryan Hewitt.

On the financial side, Funchess becomes the second best-paid receiver behind Hilton. With a one-year contract, he will have the opportunity to prove his value for a longer extension during the next season, while the Colts avoid storing money in the long term in a talent out of the ordinary.
