André Previn – composer, arranger, musical director and pianist – passed away, The New York Times reports. Born in Berlin in 1929, Previn began composing for MGM while he was still in high school. For over fifteen years, he wrote what he later called "commercial commercial music," honing his talents before leaving the studio system to focus on his burgeoning classical career. As a jazz pianist, he has played alongside artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Benny Carter, Shelly Manne and many others. Previn has also been conductor and music director of several symphonies throughout his career, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
In his personal life, Previn has been married five times, including to actress Mia Farrow (his third wife). He had several children at these weddings and adopted three children when he married Farrow. (One of these adoptees, Soon-Yi Previn, was born in Korea, and then married Woody Allen following his highly publicized break with Farrow.)
