BELFAST, Maine – The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has opened a third investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak in Waldo County. This focuses on the Penobscot McCrum potato processing plant in Belfast.
There are nine cases associated with the company, Maine CDC spokesperson Robert Long said Tuesday morning.
Dayna McCrum, head of human resources at Penobscot McCrum, said on Tuesday that the company continues to encourage employees who are not feeling well or who have symptoms that may be due to COVID-19 to get tested. According to a promotional video from 2016, Penobscot McCrum employed 180 people at the Belfast processing plant.
“Penobscot McCrum is currently investigating all possible cases of COVID-19 and is following state and federal guidelines regarding positive test results for employees,” she said. “Penobscot McCrum has been and will continue to investigate COVID-19 cases on a case-by-case basis and follow current CDC guidelines and necessary safety measures.”
The other two investigations into the outbreaks in the county, which in recent weeks have been a hotspot for illness in Maine, are taking place at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast and Calvary Chapel Belfast in Searsmont.
Jen Harris, a spokesperson for the hospital, said on Tuesday that a total of eight staff and no patients had tested positive for the disease. She said the hospital’s internal contact tracing to date indicates that employee cases identified since July do not share a common bond.
“In most, if not all, cases, probable exposure outside of work has been identified,” she said.
