Despite the increase in COVID-19 cases, President Emmanuel Macron’s administration has yet to declare a new national lockout, preferring to tighten measures locally in hard-hit cities like Nice and Dunkirk, but Paris has been spared so far.
“I call on everyone, and especially those who live in the capital, to be extremely careful, to wear the mask and to respect social distance. The aim is to reduce the pressure on the hospital system,” said Castex during a visit to the hospital.
On Friday, the number of people with COVID-19 in intensive care units exceeded 4,000 for the first time since November 26, with nearly 1,100 COVID-19 patients in ICUs in the Paris region alone.
In Paris and the surrounding region, health officials say intensive care units are on the verge of overcrowding.
Castex said that in the Ile-de-France region around Paris, the vaccination campaign would be accelerated this weekend, with the delivery of 25,000 additional doses.
France’s vaccination schedule has been hampered by logistical bottlenecks and delivery problems from vaccine manufacturers, but Castex said the campaign was picking up steam, with 320,326 injections given on Friday, a new record.
