(CNN) – In an apparent act of popular justice, a man was beaten to death after trying to steal a car with three children inside, Philadelphia police said.

Erik Hood, The 54-year-old left with the car while the children's father and mother were in a shop on Thursday night, police said. The parents chased the vehicle and fired the prisoner from the car when he was caught in traffic jams, the police said.

Hood attacked the father and escaped, but a large crowd arrested Hood and beat him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the Temple University Hospital, police said.

"I am not a fan of street justice," Philadelphia Police captain Jason Smith said at a press conference on Friday. "I think everything should be done through us regarding criminal actions."

Police have a video of the meeting and are trying to identify the people who assaulted Hood, Smith said. No arrests were made, he said.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office said the prosecutors were waiting for the police to complete the investigation before commenting.

Children in the vehicle were not injured, police said.
