New London – Middlebury spoiled the Connecticut College senior volleyball team’s day with a 3-0 victory in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game on Saturday.
Middlebury (15-1, 5-1) won 25-17, 25-20 and 25-17.
Senior Conn Avery Light, recognized before the game for his contribution to the program, had nine kills and four blocks. Julia Dailey had 14 digs, Natasha Shrivastava had 12 assists, nine digs and two blocks and Annie Wibblesman had four blocks for Conn (4-7, 1-6).
Conn lost to Amherst 3-1 in a NESCAC game on Friday night. Christina Leduc and Emma Wheeler had 13 assists each, Dailey had 27 digs, Nicolette Marino had 13 digs and Shrivastava had 40 assists for Conn. Amherst (9-1, 4-1) won 25-18, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-20.
Men’s football
• Mitchell College tied 1-1 in overtime with Lesley in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Nicholas Ghirardi of Mitchell of East Lyme tied the game with a 61st minute goal thanks to an assist from Dylan Lucey of Lebanon. Mystic’s Joey Rosa made four saves for Mitchell (0-8-2, 0-1-1).
• The Coast Guard Academy lost to Babson 1-0 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference game. Lyndon Way scored in the 40th minute against Babson (7-3-2, 3-0-1) who held on for the win. Josh Hudson made five saves for the Coast Guard (8-3-1, 2-2).
Women’s football
• Clark defeated the Coast Guard 3-1 in the NEWMAC. Sarah Schollenberger and Hope Drake-Duval combined seven saves for the Coast Guard (2-9, 0-4). Three different players scored for Clark (7-4, 3-1).
Cross country
• Conn College defeated Mitchell on Friday, winning the men’s and women’s races by 15-50 points. Conn took the top five places in the men’s race with Ascher MacLean winning with a time of 20:09 on the 6km course at Stenger Farms in Waterford. Lucas Vasquez was second, also in 20:09, followed by Sean Evans (20:21), Will Bryant (20:32) and Bennett MacDougall (20:36).
Conn took the top four places in the women’s race, led by Emi Schwab in 23:38 and Julia Curran at the same time. Rachel House (23:42) was third and Lauren Hino (24:06) fourth. Mitchell’s Lara Jacobs was fifth (24:37).
Men’s hockey
• Boston University scored twice in the third period to rally to a 2-1 win over UConn in the Hockey East opener for both teams on Friday night. Vladislav Firstov gave UConn the lead (1-1) with his goal in the first half. Darion Hanson made 43 saves for the Huskies.
