Montville – The Education Council continues to enforce the school mask policy after a COVID-19 update at a meeting Tuesday night.

Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order and mask mandate for state schools are due to expire on September 30, but the board also has its own mask policy.

Superintendent Laurie Pallin presented a map from the state’s Department of Public Health on Tuesday, showing the average daily rate of coronavirus cases per 100,000 population per city. Montville continues to be in the red zone, with 19.7 cases per 100,000.

“It’s leveling but it’s not going down,” Pallin said.

Based on the data, she recommended that the board continue to enforce its school mask policy, regardless of the expiring executive decree. The board of directors has decided to review the mask policy on the third week of October.

During the meeting, the board of directors also approved a policy that mirrors the executive decree coming into effect on September 27, requiring all covered workers to present proof of vaccination, appointment or exemption. Pallin said there are currently 50 workers – out of the 550 in the district – who are unvaccinated and less than 20 about to be vaccinated.
