Groton – Axle DeJesus picked Kyle Richards with the tiebreaker in the seventh inning as the Sonics beat the Tides 3-2 to win their first Eastern Connecticut Major League baseball championship on Wednesday night in Washington Park.
The Sonics won the best of three final 2-1. The two teams split the first two games on Tuesday night, with the Sonics winning Game 1, 4-0, and the Tides rebounding to win Game 2, 9-5.
Richards opened the seventh inning of the deciding game with a triple before DeJesus delivered his hit to the center-right.
Harry Ferguson, relieving Richards, was the winning pitcher while Derek Descouliss went the distance for the Tides in loss. Ben Desaulnier had a triple and scored both points for the Tides.
On Tuesday, the Sonics won Game 1 as Aaron Wadja had two hits, including an RBI brace that scored Richards in the first inning. The Tides rebounded in Game 2 with a six-point fourth inning making the difference. Colbey Greeenhalgh managed a single and a double for the Tigers while Jacob Plikus added a brace and Robbie Delacruz scored twice.
Bryce Bedard was the winning pitcher. He went the distance, giving a solo home run to Kyle Williams, who finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.
