Stonington – Stonington crushed another outclassed opponent on Friday night.
Make it three straight wins for the Bears.
They crossed and passed Montville in a convincing 55-7 victory in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III action at Palmer Field. They improved to 3-1 overall, 3-0 in the league while the Indians fell to 0-3, 0-1.
They beat their last three opponents, 164-7, previously flattening Griswold / Wheeler (60-0) and Bacon Academy (49-0).
“We have a lot of kids who contribute,” said Stonington coach AJ Massengale. “It’s a fun bunch of kids. We’re having a great time in training, doing whatever we need to do. We need to keep improving.”
A relentless rushing offense propelled Stonington, who racked up 237 yards in the first half while building a 41-7 advantage.
Juniors Josh Mooney and Will French each scored two touchdowns before intermission and senior Matt Castagliuolo added one. Quarterback Dorian White joined junior Brady Mullen on a six-yard strike.
The Indians actually took the first lead of the game, walking 64 yards and scoring on quarterback Chas Terni’s four-yard goalie. Terni also completed two passes for 48 yards on the disc.
Tarnished started hot before cooling down. He finished 6 for 14 for 99 yards.
The Bears dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Ball carriers often had big holes to go through and then dodged defenders for big wins.
After falling behind, Stonington scored on six straight shots.
Mooney capped a 52-yard walk with a 14-yard scorer, but the Bears missed the extra point to lead 7-6. They covered 58 yards in just five games to take the lead for good, as French found the end zone at four yards and Castagliuolo ran in the two-run down test for a 14-7 advantage with 3. : 45 to play in the first quarter.
It was a runaway from there.
Castagliuolo rushed for a top 92 yards.
The second half got off to a bad start for the Indians, who watched junior Josiah Blackman make his way through traffic for an 82-yard kickoff return to open the third quarter.
The return of the kickoff for a score will cost Massengale a pizza due to a promise he made earlier this week.
“I owe them food now,” Massengale said.
French added a third touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Massengale is happy with the Bears’ start to the season.
“We’ve had a great week of training,” said Massengale. “The children work very hard. We try to make a lot of children play here.”
More difficult opponents are on the way for the Bears, whose next game is against Killingly on October 15.
The week off will give Stonington time to right his mistakes.
“So much unnecessary nonsense today that cannot happen against the teams that we have to come”, Massengale. “We can’t do that stuff with Killingly.… In a few weeks, Killingly comes along, he’s a different monster.”
