The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is warning residents of New England’s south coast of poor air quality forecast for Thursday.
An EPA press release sent Wednesday says “New England state air quality forecasters predict unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups, due to ozone tropospheric “.
Affected areas include the Connecticut coast as well as southeastern Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island. The EPA suggested limiting “strenuous outdoor activities” on Thursday.
“Ground-level ozone is formed when volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides (precursors of ozone) interact in the presence of strong sunlight,” the agency said. “Large sources of combustion, cars, trucks and buses emit the majority of the pollution that creates ozone. Emissions from gas stations, printing plants, household products like paints and some cleaners, and lawn and garden equipment also add to the ozone problem. “
People are encouraged to use public transportation, carpool, consume less electricity, and avoid using small gasoline engines like lawn mowers, for example.
