Several companies are working on the technology needed to send the man back to the moon. Part of the technology is giving astronauts a place to live and work while on the moon. Lockheed Martin is working on a lunar habitat and has announced that its large-scale prototype, called the Habitat Ground Test Article (HGTA), has been finalized.
The prototype housing was assembled in a freight container from the era of the shuttle, called the Versatile Logistics Module, at the Kennedy Space Center. The habitat was built using fast prototypes and modern design tools such as VR and AR. The interior is customized to take full advantage of the entire module volume to perform a range of tasks.
Tasks include scientific missions and the personal needs of astronauts living in the interior. The housing team said that in the last five months, she had used tools such as virtual reality and augmented reality to make the building process easier and more efficient . Lockheed Martin also used the expertise gained from robotics missions such as OSIRIS-REx and Insight to integrate reliable robotic features into the design.
Lockheed indicates that the next step is to transfer the prototype habitat to the NASA NextSTEP team for evaluation. The first real test of habitat will take place during the week of March 25, when a team of NASA astronauts will live and work inside the prototype.
The astronaut team will evaluate the layout and give feedback on the design. The NASA team will also validate the overall design. Once the NASA team is complete, Lockheed optimizes and studies the prototype in order to prepare for other lunar missions.
