The recent drop in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations is likely unrelated to vaccine distribution, and people should continue to adhere to public health guidelines to slow the spread of the virus, top infectious disease expert said from the country.

“The number of vaccines we put in people’s arms, [it’s] a good start, we want to continue and get a lot of people vaccinated, but I don’t think the dynamics of what we are seeing now with the cap is still significantly influenced – it will be soon – but yet by the vaccine, ”Anthony said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), in an interview on NBC.Today”Show Monday.

According to Centers for Disaster Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 22 million doses have been administered across the country with more than 41 million distributed.

Fauci said the drop in cases and hospitalizations in recent days is likely due to a natural leveling off in infections following the holiday season surge. Cases fell over 20 percent over the past two weeks across the country. The seven-day average for new daily cases is greater than 167,000, and more than 110,000 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19.

“We don’t want to be complacent and think, ‘Oh, things are going in the right direction, we can go back a bit’ because we have a UK variant circulating around the country that is in over 20 states. now, ”the president’s chief medical adviser said.

The British variant, which the CDC says is likely to become the dominant strain in the United States, is believed to be more transmissible, and British health officials warned last week that there was evidence that it could be more deadly.

Fauci stressed that the data was still preliminary, but said he was “fairly convinced that there was an increase in the severity of the actual infection.”

Health officials have said they believe the current vaccines should be effective against the British strain and the new South African strain.
