FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) – Kentucky health officials say that the epidemic of E. Coli's in the state has increased significantly since they've initially alerted consumers about the increasing number of cases.
The number of cases rose to 46 from 20 the previous week. Cases occur in all parts of Kentucky, and half of the cases involve people under 18 years of age.
Six were hospitalized as a result of the illness.
The health department is still working to find out where the source comes from.
"It's probably a source of food because it has been distributed everywhere, no matter what it is," said the CDC's field manager and l & # 3939; Interim State Epidemiologist Dr. Dough Thoroughman. "To have so many cases in this short span of time, it's unlikely to be another source, so we think it's a good distribution."
Thoroughman said cooking your food would kill E. coli and you should also wash the products diligently.
Other states are experiencing similar activity, but Kentucky has the highest number of confirmed cases. Fayette County has the most in Kentucky with nine cases.
