The EIPH identifies two variants of coronavirus in the district; recommends permanent precautions

IDAHO FALLS – Eastern Idaho Public Health has identified the presence of two variants of the coronavirus in the district. The UK variant (B.1.1.7) and the California variant are offshoots of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is the virus responsible for COVID-19.

Both variants have already been identified in other parts of the state, according to a press release from the EIPH.

With the emergence of these variants in eastern Idaho, officials say it’s imperative the public follow recommendations to slow the spread of the virus. These recommendations include:

  • Keep your hands clean and avoid touching your face unnecessarily.
  • Stay home in case of illness except to see a doctor.
  • Follow all quarantine and isolation guidelines.
  • Keep a space between yourself and other people who do not belong to the same household.
  • When you can’t get away, wear a mask properly.
  • Get vaccinated when you are eligible.

The best results in reducing viral transmission are obtained when all of these strategies are implemented together, depending on the version. Health officials say no single response tool is perfect for reducing the spread of the virus. National health officials say different vaccines still show efficacy against the variants.

Bonneville and Madison counties made national news last week for being among the fastest growing hotspots for the virus in the country. There are currently no warrants in force in either county, but recommendations regarding masks and collection restrictions remain in place.

Currently, there are 653 active COVID-19 cases in the district. As of March 2020, there have been 25,807 cases in the district, with 25,154 healings and 228 deaths, according to the latest statistics.
