The Miami Dolphins have recruited attacking midfielder Mark Walton after his successful tryout at rookie minicamp this weekend.
Walton, a 2018 fourth-round pick from the University of Miami, has been stopped three times in 2019 before being suspended by the Cincinnati Bengals this season.
Dolphins coach Brian Flores said Saturday that "people deserved a second chance" in reference to Walton's test.
"I do not want to judge people on the basis of an incident (or two)," Flores said. "I think it's a case-by-case situation for a player and just for people in general – it's a bit my position."
Speaking with reporters Saturday, Walton declined to comment on his legal situation, but he showed his gratitude for the Dolphins by giving him this opportunity.
"There was a lot going on during the off season, but for the moment, I'm concentrating on the task at hand.For the moment, it's an essay for the Miami Dolphins and that's what I will talk now, "said Walton. I said.
The legal cases related to his arrests on March 12, January 16 and January 16 are still pending, and the NFL may decide to impose disciplinary action at a later date.
He faces a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and three criminal charges: resistance to an officer without violence, possession of marijuana and reckless conduct after the March 12 incident, charge of battery in the case of February 16 and possession for marijuana offense the arrest of January 16.
Flores, General Manager Chris Grier and other Dolphins staff discussed his legal issues before trying and signing him.
Walton is from Miami and offers him the opportunity to revive his career in the NFL near his home.
"He's a talented player," Flores said. "We really wanted to watch it and see if it was done for us on the field (and) off the field."
Walton joins a race hall led by Kenyan Drake and Kalen Ballage. The Dolphins also recruited a back, Chandler Cox, and a half, Myles Gaskin, in the seventh round.
Flores said he foresaw that the Dolphins would keep five or six backs in their final roster of 53 players.
Walton, who has 14 carries for 34 yards and five catches for 41 yards in 14 games with the Bengals last season, is at his best as a running back to catch the passes.
