The Mars Mars InSight has detected an earthquake on the planet.
The news: On its 128th day on the red planet, the LG has detected the first definitive sign of tremor since March. The measured small seismic activity was similar to the motion detected on the moon during Apollo missions.
Some antecedents: The InSight Lander arrived on Mars last November with the goal of Learn more about the inside of our planetary neighbor. The essential equipment, a super sensitive seismometer manufactured by CNES, the French space agency, has been listening since December. The first signal of an earthquake was captured on April 6.
And after: Although small, the earthquake is proof that there is seismic activity and that larger earthquakes can still be detected, which could help researchers to deduce the internal structure of the planet. Some other potential earthquakes were also detected, but they were even weaker and their origin was not so clear. As principal investigator of InSight, Bruce Banerdt said in a statement"We have collected the background noise up to now, but this first event officially inaugurates a new field: Martian seismology."
