We went through a rollercoaster regarding folding phones this year. Huawei and Samsung have released their flyers, the Mate X and the Galaxy Fold. Last month, the latter was involved in a controversy after critics found that their units were down (hardware and software). Samsung has finally postponed the launch.
Now, according to a CNET reportGoogle is working on a device for this new form factor. Mario Queiroz, who heads Google's Pixel team, told the publication that the company was experimenting with a foldable phone:
We protect folding screens and many other new hardware technologies. We have no related product announcements yet.
It's pretty exciting for two reasons. First, Google can learn from mistakes made by expensive hardware manufacturers such as Samsung.and make a strong phone. Of course, the company's roadmap for Pixel's material quality has not been excellent. But building for this form factor is a completely different game. Plus, the company can quickly track phone updates to make it a seamless browser.
Secondly, Google is responsible for the APIs that will shape the behavior of software on foldable phones. Last year, the company announced that Android would formally support the form factor. With a hardware device at their side, it can properly demonstrate the behavior of applications on these devices.
A patent filed by the company last March indicated an in-shell form factor for a foldable phone. But we can not say for sure if it will be the final design. I can not wait to see what Google brings to the group.
