HELHEIM GLACIER, Greenland – Greenland is where the refrigerator door of the Earth is left open, where glaciers are dwindling and the sea begins to rise.

Scientists are working hard to try to understand the extremely rapid melting of ice, because the future of the planet is written in Greenland.

The summer this year is hitting the island hard with record heat and extreme melting. Scientists estimate that by the end of the summer, about 440 billion tonnes of ice – perhaps more – will have melted or calved off the Greenland Ice Cap.

The Helheim Glacier, for example, has shrunk about 10 km since the scientists' visit in 2005.
