A timepiece by renowned English watchmaker George Daniels set a new world record, auctioned for 3.6 million pounds ($ 4.5 million).
The Space Traveler, a yellow gold watch with a double link chain and a gold and blued steel double-ended wrench, sold at Sotheby's in London and set a record for an English watch.

The watch, described by Daniels as "the type of watch you would need for your package tour to Mars," was one of 23 pocket watches hand-made by the master watchmaker.

Inspired by the 1969 American lunar landing, the Space Traveler was designed to display solar time and sidereal time, respectively, according to the relative positions of the earth and the sun, and the relative positions of the earth and stars. time (the difference between the time indicated on the clocks and the sundials) and the phases of the moon.

"Daniels was determined to ensure that his watch could be used theoretically by an astronaut, so he decided to design a watch that simultaneously displayed solar mean time and sidereal time," said Sotheby's.

The watch, completed in 1982, also includes Daniels' independent double wheel escapement, invented by the watchmaker in 1974.

He then created another version of the watch, Space Traveler II, which remained in his own collection until his death and was sold at Sotheby's London in September 2017 at a price of 3.1 million from £, the previous record of an English watch.

Regarded as one of the finest watchmakers of the twentieth century, Daniels created his timepieces by hand – with case, dial and movement. He died in 2011.
