The German family owned by Krispy Kreme and Panera counts on its Nazi past

Most US consumers are probably completely unaware that well-known food chains and coffee brands such as Panera, Peet, Pret, Keurig, Krispy Kreme, Caribou, Intelligentsia and Stumptown all belong to one German private company, JAB Holding.

But that can change now.

<p class = "canvas-atom web-text Mb (1.0em) Mb (0) – sm Mt (0.8em) – sm" type = "text" content = "The family behind JAB, the Reimann, is facing review from his Nazi past, after the German newspaper & nbsp;Bild& nbsp; reported that Albert Reimann Sr. and his son Albert Reimann Jr., both of whom died today, had links to the Third Reich. "data-reactid =" 17 "> The JAB family, the Reimanns, is under surveillance for its Nazi past, after the German newspaper Bild reported that Albert Reimann Sr. and his son Albert Reimann Jr., both dead now, had links with the Third Reich.

According to Bild, the two men were fierce supporters of Hitler and anti-Semites, donated to the SS army and used forced labor of French prisoners in their factories.

In other words, the fortune of the Reimann family is rooted in the Nazi party. And that could put the JAB portfolio marks under the microscope like never before.

The four family members who own and run JAB today are the descendants of the German chemist Ludwig Reimann. The company was named in honor of Johann Adam Benckiser, partner and legal partner of Ludwig Reimann.

And the family fully recognizes the facts of the Bild report. The Reimanns say they hired a historian in 2014 to investigate their ancestors, but the historian's full report will not be completed until 2020.

Following the Bild report, the family donates 10 million euros to an association it has not yet named.

"It's all right," Peter Harf, managing partner of JAB Holding and family spokesman, told Bild. "The family was absolutely ashamed."

The commercial problem currently facing many JAB brands is whether consumers will show their disapproval with their dollars.

Of course, many well-known companies today had well-documented links to the Nazis during the Second World War or used forced labor, including Volkswagen, BMW, Bayer and Nestle.

Yahoo Finance has started contacting all JAB brands to ask them to comment on the Reimann report, and will update this post.
