The New Orleans Saints' contract with independent table man Jared Cook has finally become official, coach Sean Payton announced Tuesday.
The Saints agreed Tuesday to sign a contract with the 10-year veteran. Payton said at league meetings in Phoenix: "I understand Jared Cook has signed and we are excited to have it."
The terms of the agreement were not immediately available.
Sean Payton suggested that officials be hired full time because "there is too much at stake".
Yeah, it's in a year. But it's not too early to ask who might be at stake in the NFL free agent category in 2020, including Russell Wilson.

The Saints-Cook couple has been reported as "close" for more than a week. Cook fulfills one of the most glaring needs of saints. They needed another reliable smuggler to join Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara. Last year, Benjamin Watson was third with 35 receptions in New Orleans – and Watson has since retired.
Cook will turn 32 on April 7, but is on the verge of the best season of his career (68 catches, 68 goals, 896 yards and six touchdowns).
Cook spent two years with the Raiders. This is the first tense game in the history of the NFL to host a 100-yard match for four teams: Titans, Rams, Packers and Raiders.
Last season, Cook played four games with over 100 yards passing. He set the franchise record for a close run with 180 yards – on nine catches – in the first game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams.
Cook finished fourth on all the tight ends of the NFL last season for the receiving yards, in fourth place touchdowns and in third with 15 receptions of at least 20 yards.
With 5,464 yards in his career, Cook is the eighth tight end of the NFL with at least 5,000 yards. He has 425 receptions for an average of 12.9 yards per jack, and he has 25 touchdowns.
He also won the Ed Block Raiders Award, which rewards "those who embody the principles of fair play and courage. The laureate symbolizes professionalism, great strength and dedication ".
