Here’s who stood out on day 10 of training camp. Keep in mind that the 49ers weren’t wearing pads and the only defensive starters who played were Fred Warner, Dr. Greenlaw, Javon Kinlaw and Emmanuel Moseley. The other starters were injured or had time off.
GOOD
1. Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw.
In fact, he trained to change and dominated the first team’s offensive line for 11-11. Defeating Daniel Brunskill for a sack. Kinlaw is such a conundrum.
2. Close winger Ross Dwelley.
Defeat security Tony Jefferson with a 1 on 1 dig route. Dwelley never loses in this drill. He also did a bouncing fingertip grab for 11 of 11s.
3. The tight end George Kittle.
Defeat safety Tavon Wilson twice for 1 on 1 – first with a dig route that circled Wilson like a record, then with a double back and forth movement that resulted in a defensive hold penalty. Kittle still succeeded. He also caught a 25-yard catch between two defensemen for 11 of 11s.
4. Tight end Jordan Matthews.
Caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Josh Rosen on the straight sideline.
5. Linebacker Dr. Greenlaw.
Intercept a through pass aimed at Raheem Mostert during 1 on 1. Greenlaw has excellent hand-eye coordination for a linebacker.
6. Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.
Broke two passes from Jimmy Garoppolo and held firm 1 on 1 against Deebo Samuel. The latter is not an easy task.
7. Full-back Josh Hokit.
Replaced by Kyle Juszczyk, who had a day off and caught five assists, a team high, in 11 of 11s. The 49ers hardly ever call for passes for Juszcyk in practices or games for that matter. I wonder if he’s jealous.
8. Running back Trey Sermon.
Defeat Greenlaw with a whip route for 1 on 1. The sermon is difficult to cover out of the backfield.
9. Running back JaMycal Hasty.
Has won all of his reps for 1v1. Hasty is clearly the hardest 49ers running back to cover.
10. Security Jared Mayden.
Broke a through pass intended for Jordan Matthews, who was making a turn.
THE NOT SO GOOD
1. Wide receiver Jalen Hurd.
Did not stretch. Did not practice. Did not show up. In other words, he did what he usually does. This is Hurd’s third season on the team, and he still hasn’t really shown up yet. I wonder if the 49ers will give him a spot on the list. He certainly didn’t win one.
2. Defensive end Nick Bosa.
Did not stretch. Did not practice. Did not walk around with his shirt rolled up. Guess he needed a break from all the non-training he’s been doing this offseason. Afterward, I asked Shanahan if Bosa was on track to play Week 1.
βI believe it,β Shanahan said. “It’s been the plan from the start. There hasn’t been a setback. He’s doing great right now.”
We will see.
3. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings.
Dropped a pass in the middle. Trey Lance doesn’t look good.
4. Wide receiver Richie James Jr.
Dropped a pass in the middle. Trey Lance doesn’t look good.
5. Quarterback Josh Rosen.
He ruined his first good moment of training camp – a 60-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Matthews – by throwing a ghastly pick-6 at Tony Jefferson soon after.
βHe took a few steps back in the last few practices,β Shanahan said. “It was unfortunate about that point (choice-6). We were supposed to go to someone and we had an interrupted route, so it all fell apart and he tried to overcompensate and make a bad situation worse.”
Making a Bad Situation Worse: The Josh Rosen Story.
Poor man.
