  • A former Trump official has said the GOP is the number one national security threat to the United States.
  • “Unless my party reforms, its extremist elements represent the main threat to our democracy,” he said.
  • Democracy scholars have issued similar warnings about the GOP, especially since January 6.

A former Trump administration official on Thursday said the Republican Party was the number one threat to U.S. national security, as party lawmakers continue to support former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims about the electoral fraud that prompted the January 6 insurgency and use it as a justification for imposing voting restrictions.

“I’ve spent my entire career not as a political agent. I’ve never worked on a campaign in my life other than the campaign against Trump. I’m a national security guy. I’ve worked in national security against ISIS, al Qaeda and Russia, ”said Miles Taylor, a former homeland security official, during an appearance on MSNBC’s“ The Reid Out ”.

“And the main national security threat that I have ever seen in my life to the democracy of this country is the party I am in – the Republican Party. It is the main national security threat to the States – United of America, ”he added. Taylor added.

The former homeland security official has been a vocal critic of Trump and his influence within the GOP. Taylor launched an anti-Trump GOP group and backed President Joe Biden during the 2020 campaign season, and in October was revealed as the anonymous author of a 2018 New York Times opinion piece that said he ‘there was “resistance” in the Trump administration. .

Although Trump is no longer in the White House, he continues to exercise unprecedented authority within the Republican Party. Taylor warned Americans on Thursday that they should worry about the country’s future if this trend continues.

“Yes [House Minority Leader] Kevin McCarthy continues to pay tribute to a twice impeached presidential loser, I think he should make all Americans think and worry about the future of this country and national security, ”Taylor said.

Taylor doubled down on his remarks in a tweet Friday.

“I stand by my statement. Unless my party reforms, its extremist elements represent the main threat to our democracy,” he said.

Democracy scholars have issued stern warnings in the wake of the Jan.6 uprising on the U.S. Capitol as the GOP tries to whitewash the deadly attack and Republican-led legislatures scale national authorities take extraordinary measures to restrict voting.

“With Trump’s departure, I was hoping that the Republican Party could recalibrate itself, move away from its illiberal, undemocratic and irrational behavior and adopt a conservative, but firmly reality-based and democratic policy,” Sheri Berman, professor of political science at Barnard College and author of “Democracy and Dictatorship in Europe: From the Old Regime to the Present,” Insider said last month.

“That the Republican Party has turned out to be a greater threat than Trump – a single individual – bodes ill for the health of American democracy,” Berman added.
