Georgia have their new defensive back coach Jahmile Addae. He had spent the previous two seasons as a cornerback coach in West Virginia, his alma mater.

The Bulldogs and Kirby Smart have now occupied their only vacant position at this point in the offseason as Charlton Warren had left to become Indiana’s defensive coordinator.
Tennessee and new head coach Josh Heupel still have a few moves to make and there is now an opening at UCF. So the coaching carousel hasn’t stopped spinning yet, but it’s starting to slow down.
And so far, the Bulldogs have emerged as winners in this process.
With schools like Texas, Oregon, and LSU all having defensive coordinator openings, Georgia was still able to keep their renowned assistants Dan Lanning and Glenn Schumann. Lanning had been linked with the opening of Texas, while Schumann was linked with jobs in Oregon and LSU.
Georgia won’t be able to keep either assistant forever. Lanning is a former finalist for the Broyles Award, which goes to the country’s top assistant coach. Schumann is also well regarded as he looks set for bigger things in the near future.
Staff turnover is generally inevitable in senior programs. This is why it seems like Alabama is constantly recharging their staff every offseason as they’ve had to hire a number of new coaches into this coaching carousel.
But Crimson Tide didn’t have to make any changes after the 2019 season. It brought Steve Sarkisian and Pete Golding back as offensive and defensive coordinators. Continuity in the coaching staff has absolutely played a role in Alabama dominating the SEC this season as they went 13-0 and won the national championship.
That’s not to say Georgia are destined to do the same in 2021 as the Bulldogs still have a number of questions. But one need only look back to last season to see how a change in the coaching staff – from James Coley to Todd Monken as an offensive coordinator – can have in a squad.
Addae could have the toughest job of all Georgia assistants in 2021, as Georgia must replace the two starting cornerbacks as well as multi-year starters Richard LeCounte and Mark Webb. The Bulldogs are talented in the defensive backfield, like former 5-star rookie Kelee Ringo, but none of that is proven on the court so far.
However, things would be much more difficult for Georgia if they were to replace either a Lanning or a Schumann in addition to Warren. It’s too early to make a final decision on hiring Adae, but the Bulldogs retaining much of their coaching staff is a big boost for the 2021 season.
