The Jets were beaten Monday night by the Browns, losing 23-3 to 0-2. Here are some thoughts and observations of the game:
1. After watching the game again, here's what I had the most to say: there were too many games where Le'Veon Bell seemed to be the only one to try. Bell has put so much effort into this game. Yes, he fumbled late, but that was because he was fighting for extra yards.
Bell had 31 hits in the game and seemed to be the Jets' only hope of generating offense. There are parts where it seems that Bell's teammates are content to watch him instead of making the same effort.
A play like this that struck me the most is the beginning of the fourth quarter. Luke Falk threw a short pass to Bell while Myles Garrett drilled the quarterback … again. Bell was encircled by the Browns but managed to escape. He was then hit by a Browns tackler and escaped again and managed to gain 8 yards when it should have been a loss. But he did it alone. I tweeted a picture showing Jets teammates watching him instead of finding someone to block.
Bell is great, but he needs help. Adam Gase will be challenged to find players who love football as much as Bell and Jamal Adams. The Jets have too many players who seem to be ready to lose.
2 We're talking a lot about 0-6 because of the difficulty of the Jets program and their appearance on Monday night. They are the underdogs of the Patriots this week in New England with 22 points and a half. After a week off, they travel to Philadelphia and play the Cowboys and Patriots at home. They will be neglected in all four games, so the 0-6 speech is not unfounded.
The key will be how fast Sam Darnold can return from mononucleosis. There is hope that he could be back for the Eagles game. If he comes back, the Jets should have a hope of winning again. Remember that the expectations of this team were 7 to 9 wins. This took a hit with Darnold being out, but though he may miss just two games, they should still be able to hit that range.
3 Good for Gase to put Trumaine Johnson on the ground. The previous Jets regime imprudently awarded him a $ 72.5 million five-year contract. Johnson was ineffective on the ground and was problematic. He missed meetings and was late last year. This led former coach Todd Bowles to render him inactive for the last game of the season in New England. This bench was not disciplinary. That was just about everything. He did not play well in the first match and did not have a good attitude.
It's refreshing to see a player being caught for his game. Bowles usually only benched players for disciplinary reasons and this took many transgressions. He was with Darrelle Revis in 2016, even when the cornerback was in trouble. This sent a good message to the cloakroom. It does not matter what your salary is. Everyone will be held responsible.
And too bad for the idea that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams can bring out the best of Johnson.
4 I think Gase takes a little too much heat for the offensive fight. Falk had never been active for a match before. It is difficult to be creative with a guy who probably did not even participate in the first team in training.
I had two problems with Gase's game call. The first arrived just before half-time. The Jets seemed to want to run around the clock and get to the locker room, which I thought was a good idea because Falk had come into play in the second quarter. Pulling from the back by 10, they did not call a timeout when the Browns had the ball. But then, Gase decided to throw the ball with 49 seconds to go. Josh Bellamy dropped the pass and the clock stopped. The Browns ended up scoring a goal to stretch their lead to 16-3 at halftime.
The other questionable call took place in the third quarter. In fact, the Jets had a good training and reached the 12 points of the Browns. In third and second place, Gase decided to throw the ball instead of throwing it. Falk missed Robby Anderson in the end of the end zone and then Bell was stopped in fourth and second place. I would have put the ball in Bell's hands twice. If you want to go, make a short pass to Bell.
Revealing stat: The Jets have lost seven straight home games. This is the longest active sequence of the NFL. You must win your home games.
Amazing instant account: Kyle Phillips played 30 shots. The defensive lineman, free agent, who was not out, was the beneficiary of the suspension of Quinnen Williams' match at the ankle. Phillips had two tackles.
Ball of play: It would be easy to give it to Le'Veon Bell, but I'm leaving with Luke Falk. It was really impressive what he did. It was the first game for which he was in uniform and he played very well. Falk completed 20 of 25 pass attempts for 198 yards. It's really hard to do when you do not even have representatives from the first team. Falk was removed from the training team on Monday afternoon.
