Kamala Harris, a long-time legislator and prosecutor in California, is running for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. She made this announcement during an appearance on ABC Hello America the day Martin Luther King Jr. 2019.
Harris is only the second African-American woman to sit in the Senate and her entry into the 2020 race is potentially historic: if she gets the nomination, she would be the first African-American woman and the first American-Asian woman become a major party candidate.
The legislator has a long history of public service. Prior to being elected to the Senate in 2016, she served as California's Attorney General and Attorney General in San Francisco for a total of 12 years. Since then, his potential for the presidential race continues to grow. She is considered a prominent champion of racial equality, although some have questioned her previous approach to criminal justice. She supported some progressive policies within the Democratic Party, including health insurance for all and the legalization of marijuana.
